Abu Obieda Ahmed, Associate Professor

About

Abu Obieda Babiker Ahmed was graduated in civil engineering in the academic year 1982 at the University of Khartoum, Sudan, with second class Division One (honors). Immediately after graduation, he joined the former Ministry of Irrigation & Water Resources - Sudan, to work as a research engineer at the Hydraulics Research Station where he developed and promoted his present career. Later during 1986-1988 he obtained his master degree (M.Sc.) program in engineer hydrology at Galway University College (National University of Ireland).

Associate Professor Abu Obieda has a broad experience, covering the different aspects of hydrology, water resources and hydraulics engineering, gained during his 35+ years practice. His main experience has been achieved in the fields of river morphology, integrated water resources management, water harvesting and calibration of hydraulic structures. He led a lot of multidisciplinary studies. Such studies required extensive hydrographic survey, physical modeling, soil classification, hydrologic analysis and decision making.

Associate Professor Abu Obieda is highly experienced in cooperative projects within the region: the Nile Basin and IGAD sub-region. This knowledge was gained through his participation as national coordinator for Applied Training Project of the NBI and Mapping, Assessment and Management of Trans-boundary Water Resources in IGAD sub-region project. He gained remarkable teaching capabilities in the fields of water resources   and hydraulics subjects (IWRM, fluid mechanics, flow measurement & control structures) besides the supervision of M.Sc. thesis at the University of Gezira. In addition to that, his travelling abroad to Africa, Europe, Asia & America is an added value to his gained experience and knowledge sharing.  Since March 2017 (2017-2019), Associate Prof. Abu Obieda is representing Sudan as a Chair of the Water Resources Committee at ESCWA-UN (Beirut/Lebanon). Also, is a member of the Capacity Development – Education and Training Group (CD-ETG) at the  International Commission on Irrigation & Drainage (ICID) – Delhi/India) and Focal Point Person on Water Resources to IGAD.

At his institute, Abu Obieda is now leading and supervising many researches and studies. Among that: “Investigation of the Pumping site at Al Bagair for Thermal Power Plant Water intake (Sept. – Nov. 2017)”, “Monitoring of Water quality of Wad Matar Agricultural Drain across Gezira Scheme (June 2016 – Dec. 2017)”, “Calibration of some hydraulic structures at Rahad Scheme (2015 – 2017)”, “Harnessing of Floods for Better Livelihood at Gash (2015 – 2018)”, “Takazi-Atbara Rivers Watershed Management (2017- mid 2019)” … etc.
